Piggy Banks and Life Lessons in Saving
Most of us first learn about saving money as children: a piggy bank on the dresser, our very first savings account at the local bank, or the all-important lesson that putting away a few coins now could mean a treat tomorrow. As we grow older, some of us don’t really outgrow this habit—tucking away bits of spare change for a rainy day, a vacation, or an unexpected emergency.
But for Otha Sanders, saving pennies turned into so much more than a childhood habit. It became a mission—and, let’s be honest, perhaps a tiny obsession.
One Penny at a Time: The Beginning of an Obsession
It all started innocently enough. Otha still remembers the day he found his very first penny laying on the ground. In the United States, the humble one-cent piece is known as a « penny,” and soon Otha found himself on the hunt for every single orphaned coin he could spot, whether abandoned on sidewalks or peeking out from the sands at the beach.
As the years went by, that collection grew bigger. Otha even shared with USA Today how this penny quest took on a spiritual dimension for him:
« I became convinced that finding a lost or dropped penny was a sign from God reminding me to always be grateful. (…) There were days when I hadn’t prayed, and most often, a lost penny would appear, reminding me to pause and give thanks. »
55 Giant Water Bottles… and 45 Years Later
How does one manage to amass such a trove of copper? Otha was no amateur.
- He always made sure, during every purchase, to get three or four extra pennies in change if he could help it.
- His growing pile, soon numbering in the tens of thousands, needed more than a shoebox. So he started storing his pennies in industrial-size water jugs—the kind you see on office water coolers. Not exactly pocket-sized storage!
Finally, after 45 years of collecting (and no doubt building up some impressive biceps moving all those coins), Otha decided it was time to find out how much his little project was worth. He didn’t go it alone—the whole operation required five friends to help—and together they hauled a whopping 55 water jugs, filled to the brim, into the Ruston Origin Bank.
The sight left the employees speechless. After all, how often do you see a septuagenarian show up with half a lifetime’s worth of pennies?
The Stunning Total—and a Taste of Reality
Of course, when it comes to counting this kind of fortune, fingers just won’t do. The bank’s trusty coin counting machines whirred away, crunching those pennies for nearly five hours. The grand tally? An astonishingly precise $5,136.14.
So what does a man do with more than five thousand dollars saved a cent at a time? In Otha’s case, the answer was simple (if a little less glamorous): the funds went straight toward paying a dental bill—a sobering reminder that sometimes, life’s surprises come in the form of both unexpected windfalls and expenses.
Saving pays off in more ways than one. Perhaps Otha’s story will make you think twice before ignoring that lonely penny on the street—or, at very least, inspire you to start looking at spare change as just a little more valuable than before.
