Why Men Get More Attractive With Age: The Surprising Truth Revealed

Date :
We’ve all heard it: men are like fine wine—they get better with age. While this might sound like one of those pop culture myths, science has actually proven there’s some truth to it (cheers to that, right?).

Silver Foxes and the Apex of Attractiveness

Take a glance at Hollywood, and you’ll see this idea on full display. As men hit what we might call a ‘mature’ age, they often reach their peak in terms of looks. No need to search far for proof: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Richard Gere, even Daniel Craig—just a handful of names that might have you nodding in agreement. Honestly, the list goes on, but there’s no point preaching to the choir.

What the Science Says

In 2018, a scientific study published in the journal Science Advances tried to get to the bottom of this phenomenon. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 200,000 users of a dating app to gauge attractiveness—or at least, perceived beauty. They based this on how many private messages each user received over a one-month period. The logic: the more messages, the more attractive others found you.

And the results? When scientists compared data by age and gender, they found that for men, their attractiveness to women peaked at—drumroll—50 years old. Yes, really: 50 is the magic number for male allure, at least as far as this study is concerned. For women, it’s a very different story: women are rated most attractive at just 18. From there, attractiveness (according to the study’s criteria) steadily declines up to the age of 65.

More Than Just a Pretty Face

Of course, beauty is famously subjective—

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” (Thank you, Oscar Wilde!)

For some, attractiveness isn’t just skin deep. It’s also about personality traits, abilities, social status, or intelligence. In other words, the ‘wow’ factor can come from much more than looks alone.

So it turns out that a man’s age isn’t the only thing working in his favor. His full set of personality traits, skills (hello, intelligence!), status (think salary and career achievements), and, crucially, the emotional maturity he acquires over time and through life experience—all these elements combine to make him more attractive.

The Advantage of Experience

Elizabeth Bruch, one of the researchers behind the study, found that the more educated a man is, the more attractive he becomes. Turns out, as men get older, their level of education tends to increase—and so does their appeal. It’s all connected.

So next time you hear someone compare men to a fine vintage, you can confidently say: science agrees!
