But for Otha Sanders, saving pennies turned into so much more than a childhood habit. It became a mission—and, let’s be honest, perhaps a tiny obsession.

How does one manage to amass such a trove of copper? Otha was no amateur.
- He always made sure, during every purchase, to get three or four extra pennies in change if he could help it.
- His growing pile, soon numbering in the tens of thousands, needed more than a shoebox. So he started storing his pennies in industrial-size water jugs—the kind you see on office water coolers. Not exactly pocket-sized storage!
Finally, after 45 years of collecting (and no doubt building up some impressive biceps moving all those coins), Otha decided it was time to find out how much his little project was worth. He didn’t go it alone—the whole operation required five friends to help—and together they hauled a whopping 55 water jugs, filled to the brim, into the Ruston Origin Bank.
The sight left the employees speechless. After all, how often do you see a septuagenarian show up with half a lifetime’s worth of pennies?
The Stunning Total—and a Taste of Reality
Of course, when it comes to counting this kind of fortune, fingers just won’t do. The bank’s trusty coin counting machines whirred away, crunching those pennies for nearly five hours. The grand tally? An astonishingly precise $5,136.14.
So what does a man do with more than five thousand dollars saved a cent at a time? In Otha’s case, the answer was simple (if a little less glamorous): the funds went straight toward paying a dental bill—a sobering reminder that sometimes, life’s surprises come in the form of both unexpected windfalls and expenses.
